8 Great Wine Bars in Madrid

A mix of more and lesser known places in Madrid not to miss if you are a visiting wine lover.

“Wine bars” are quite literally everywhere in Madrid, but in a sea of tapas and unlimited vino and cerveza, looking for quality Spanish wines is not the easiest task. While in Madrid studying Spanish wine I made it my goal to drink my way through Spanish DO’s I could not find elsewhere. Some lesser known, and a couple more known, in this article I share my experience so you can go to the best wine bars in Madrid while you are there.

I lived in Madrid for a year (a long time ago) and while I was going to a couple of these wine spots, this trip I focussed on finding the best wine vibes. These 8 wine bars are throughout the centre of Madrid, this way you have a nice wine spot in the city no matter where you find yourself. Just like Madrid this list varies in all types of wine places in hopes to find something for every wine lover.

Join me in walking my way around the city to find some of the best wine spots doing a walk through tasting of the country.

Angelita

Let’s start with amazing quality food, all sourced from small farms from the North of Spain. Absolutely delicious, this fancy wine restaurant with a bar has an incredible wine list and farm fresh dishes. The service is meticulous, a great choice off of Gran Via (the massively alive shopping street connecting Calle de Alcalá to Plaza de España). It’s tucked around the corner, great for a relaxing lunch after a morning of shopping.

For a finer meal, but with small portion options as well, and every wine a wine lover could be looking for.

Casa Gonzales

If you are looking for something authentic with local feeling, the “old school” Casa Gonzales offers a wide selection of Spanish wines (and a bottle shop) where you can have Jamón and cheese plates, sandwiches, and small dishes while you’re on the backstreets between Sol and Anton Martin. This was probably one of my favourite places I found, and I will definitely be back. After a day of exploring museums or being at Parque de el Retiro you will find an authentic aperitivo here before you head home.

 La Venezia

Tucked away behind Sol, on a street full of old school tavernas and tapa bars, La Venezia is just a vibe. This antique wine bar as an incredible wall of vintage bottles and barriques full of wine behind the bar. Here, quality is not the shinning star but you will step back in time for the hour that you inside this cute and authentic wine bar.

 Bodegas Ricla

Likely you’ll find your way to Plaza Mayor, and close by this small bodega has a wide selection of Spanish wine and quality raciones. It feels very typical and authentic, and an ideal place to stop for a glass of wine and a bite on your way around the centre sites of Madrid.

 Almacen de Vinos Casa Gerardo

If I can encourage you to grab local cheese and a glass of wine anywhere it is here. Tucked away just above Puerta de Toledo in a more residential vibe in the southern centre of Madrid. This bar has a great wine selection from allover Spain, and a wide selection of quality cheeses as well. The multiple tasting plates and the wine selection will leave you really feeling like a local. It feels like nothing has changed here since when it was first established.

Lavinia

This wine shop is where you go to get to know all of Spains wine regions. With jaw dropping selection of wines to buy, Lavinia is high class with excellent service, and an upstairs bistro where you can have lunch with their spectacular wine list. It is located in the high class Salamanca area, where the streets are lined with designer shops. Don’t let that deter you, the staff are very friendly and welcoming to all wine lovers.

Mercado de San Miguel

Most likely packed with people, Mercado San Miguel is a central market, but in my opinion a must see. The wine bar in this market does have a great selection, and the food stalls are fantastic too. I would try to avoid a weekend there, but would say it is a place not to miss. It is great to buy a bottle and sit outside in the warmer months.

Mercado San Anton

This is a much more chill market than San Miguel, but the wine bar on the second floor has a nice selection of bottles, and a select list of wines by the glass for the day. This market has a small but really great array of foods with the bistro on the first floor comes fancier options, authentic pinchos and tapas on the second floor, and a great rooftop terrace bar. This is one of my favourite areas of Madrid (Chueca) so I find myself here at least once during every trip to Madrid.

In Madrid finding a variety of wine bars, from high class to cozy, but all with an impressive Spanish wine selection was my goal. From feeling like a local to the fancier side of things I think I succeeded in narrowing down my wine bar list in one of my favourite cities.

Enjoy your time in Madrid, and be sure to have a glass of wine for me!
