3 Days in Trentino – Complete Wine Tasting Itineraries

In Trentino wine tourism itineraries can seem more on hidden side compared to other places. Whether you are going to Trentino Alto-Adige for wine tasting, hiking, hot springs, enotourism, or adventure, this complete 3 day Trentino itinerary is filled with at least 3 wineries to visit each day, a restaurant recommendation in the area, and a leisure activity as well. All Google maps are linked for you to use and customize as you go wine tasting in Trentino!

If you are reading this, lush Trentino in the Dolomite mountain region of Italy is on your list or your next adventure. Famous for summer hiking and winter skiing Trentino makes a great all year round destination because of its diverse activities. While I do not usually write “complete travel itineraries”, I have lived in Trentino for more than 7 years now and spent all of my free time pre covid exploring Trentino. Here I have decided to create 3 complete days of Trentino itineraries packed with my favourite wineries and restaurant suggestions so you can pick up a day travel plan as it suits your Northern Italy desires.

Your time in Trentino will vary based on where you choose to stay; whether in one hotel while you move around, or changing location for a fresh perspective and closer activities. The main cities of Trentino Alto-Adige are Trento (Trentino) and Bolzano (Alto-Adige). Like most places for wine tourism there are hundreds, if not thousands, of potential wineries to visit, but I have selected these wineries based on the full day itineraries I have created, to help you into your Trentino Alto-Adige wine tasting adventure with ease. Trains and public transport are well connected in Northern Italy, but everything is much easier by car.

I have started these itineraries from different locations but are easily adjustable depending on where you choose to stay. At the bottom of this post are my recommendations for places to stay, depending on where you would like to be based from. Also, I have chosen one restaurant a day to fit 3 winery visits and at least one leisure activity for you to customize the itinerary!

DAY 1

Today’s itinerary is focused in South Tyrol, with a total driving time of 59 minutes.

Winery 1: Elena Walch winery

Start off the day at female owned and operated winery. Focused on terrior, Elena Walch produces elegant, innovative, and leading wines.

Lunch: Philiaz

Drive along the winding “Strada del Vino” where there are many wineries and restaurants to stop at. For a formal sit down lunch I suggest Philiaz. For a more casual setting, the next stop is Lago di Caldaro or “Kalterer See” in German where there are a variety of easy going restaurants, or you could stop at a supermarket and bring a light lunch to sit at the lake/rent a peddle boat/walk along the shore.

Winery 2: Franz Haas winery

On your way back from lunch stop at the fun, historic, and innovative winery Franz Haas. They have a great tasting space and are eager to have you try their available wines.

Winery 3: Haderburg winery

If you have the time for a 3rd winery of the day stop here, especially if you are a bubble lover. This is a family owned and operated winery, specializing in delicious sparkling wines.

If you have time, the last stop is Castello Haderburg. This medieval castle will blow your mind! You are unable to access the castle by car, but park at the bottom of the hill in the large parking lot and hike up the path 15 minutes to reach this one of a kind South Tyrol castle. You can visit the castle for 2EUR (allowing half an hour to wander through the ruins) but they also have a bar/restaurant inside the castle walls – I know, so Italian. The food is typically “medieval style” but it is definitely worth the visit and a great way to soak in activity and history together.

Day 2

Today I’ve set you up with a very localized day in the Piana Rotaliana, focused on the rich and historic Teroldego wines. Total driving time is 23 minutes, with the addition your choice of 3 minute funivia/1 hour hike/ 2 hour hike.

(Starting from the Mezzocorona train station)

Winery 1: Cantina Dorigati winery

Elegant wines and a beautiful new tasting room awaits you in the heart of the town at this historic winery.

If hiking is your thing, continue on to Monte Mezzocorona where you have a view at the top of the entire Piana Roatliana. You go up the steep hill by car or foot to the funivia (runs every 15 minutes but check it’s IG/website for updated hours and takes 3 minutes to arrive at the top. There are 2 hotels (also with restaurants) if you would like to choose the top of the mountain for your stay or lunch. From there you can also continue on a 1 hour hike to “Malga Kraun” walking through the forest to arrive at a small farm serving authentic hearty meals. Note: you can also turn going into Monte Mezzocorona into a full day of hiking through 2 other options. “Ferrata Burrone Giovanelli” is a 2-3 hour hike up the mountain (advanced) series of ladders built into the rock. The other option is a 1-2 hour hike straight up from the funivia which is quite intense but rewarding and also has great views.

Winery 2: Azienda Agricola Foradori winery

Taste and tour this world famous winery; biodynamic, organic, one of a kind!

Winery 3: (me but how could I not add it!) Cantina A. Martinelli winery

My husband, his brother and I restored the family winery in 2013, we are open daily for tours and tastings.

Dinner: Locanda Camorz restaurant

You’ll find a great selection of local wines and a modern twist on traditional dishes.

Day 3

Although coming back up North a bit, this itinerary is more Trento focused, but could easily be changed to a focus in Val di Cembra where you will find many beautiful hikes, wineries, and waterfalls. Total driving time is 48 minutes. This is also a great opportunity to visit the medieval city of Trento.

Winery 1: Azienda Agricola Pojer e Sandri winery

Between Valle dell’Adige and Valle di Cembra in the cute place of Faedo, this winery is making some fantastic wines!

Winery 2: Cantina Endrizzi winery

Coming down the hill you will find the big tasting room at Endrizzi where you are able to try as many of their wines as you’d like.

Freshen up, on your way back to Trento stop at “Orrido di Ponte Alto” where you are given a 20 minute tour into a crazy canyon.

Winery 3: Ferrari Fratelli Lunelli winery

Massive can be extremely impressive, and these delicious award winning, TrentoDOC, world renowned sparkling wines are worth a visit while in the hills of Trento.

Dinner: Pizzeria da Albert website

In my opinion, the best pizza in Trentino (and everyone needs pizza at least once while in Italy). Located in the centre of Trento, it is perfect for a casual evening in the city. You can not make reservations, but things move quite quickly.
